In Europe and in the so called “First World”, sanitary pads comes mainly as a topic when deciding on the product to be used, as it is part and parcel of normal sanitary products used by girls and women.
Insufficiency of this product in the “West” is unthinkable.

In Kenya and other parts of Africa, availability of these products is really a big problem, not because they don’t exist, but that they are unaffordable.
Many families simply can not afford buying sanitary towels.

Due to the merge income by families in Kenya, food is the most important basic need.

Women, who are responsible for the upkeep of the family, have to bear the shame of not using sanitary towels but to buy food with the little they earn.
As a cheap replacement to sanitary towels, they use pieces of cotton clothes, that is then hand washed and passed on to the next female family member. This creates a big risk to transfer diseases especially in this era of HIV / AIDS.

During menstruation girls are forced to stay away from school, averagely four days per month, as these cotton clothes cause embarrassments such as leakage. This adds to about five week absenteeism from school per year, hence a bad influence to the girl’s development and academic performance in school.

“Pamba Familia” develops an on-site production in the country, gives the items to the girls and women for free and additionally holds lectures up-country and in schools.
